Application Criteria

To apply you must:

• Be an AUA member urologist
• Demonstrate a commitment to or have deep interest in the field of health policy
• Be dedicated to advancing urology's health policy agenda

As a scholar, you will spend up to 30 days away from your practice for intensive training on a wide range of health policy issues.

Your training includes:

• Mentoring from seasoned physician volunteers
• Participation in key meetings and conferences
• Participation in public policy activities as outlined by the Public Policy Council

Stipend and reimbursement for scholars

A stipend of $15,000 and reimbursement for travel and other expenses will be provided over the course of the year-long program.

About the Gallagher Scholarship

In 2007, the AUA Board of Directors approved the launch of this annual scholar program in honor of former executive director, G. James Gallagher. The Gallagher Health Policy Scholar Program hopes to attract those urologists who have demonstrated a commitment to or have a keen interest in the field of health policy and who are dedicated to advancing urology's health policy agenda.

Current Gallagher Scholar

Brian D. Duty, MD, MBA

Associate Professor, Department of Urology, Oregon Health & Science University
Assistant Residency Program Director, Department of Urology, Oregon Health & Science University

Dr. Duty is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at the Oregon Health & Science University. His area of clinical focus is Endourology, but he has been deeply committed to health policy at both a state and national level. He is a member of the AUA Leadership Program Class of 2021-2022 and the recipient of the 2022 AUA Gallagher Health Policy Scholarship.

Dr. Duty is currently President of the Oregon Urological Society, Vice Speaker of the Oregon Medical Association (OMA) and serves on the OMA Board of Trustees. Additionally, he serves on a variety of advocacy and legislative committees, including the AUA Public Policy Council, AUA State Advocacy Committee, American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU) State Advocacy Network Committee, OMA Legislative Affairs Committee, and the AUA Western Section Health Policy Committee.

Robert A. Bass, MD, MBA

Urologist, Middle Tennessee Urology Specialists

Dr. Robert A. Bass was born and raised in Lafayette, LA. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 1998 and then graduated from medical school at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans in 2002. He completed his urology residency at University of Kansas Medical Center in 2007. He earned his MBA degree at George Washington University in 2018.

Dr. Bass practices general urology with specialized training in both laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He also specializes in men’s health including penile implant surgery.
