Young Urologist of the Year Award Winners

Established by the 2012-2013 AUA Young Urologists Committee (YUC) Chair, Dr. Michael C. Ost, the Young Urologist of the Year Award is presented annually to select early-career AUA members in recognition of their efforts and commitment to advancing the development of fellow young urologists. The following members were selected by their colleagues who serve on the Young Urologists Committee and endorsed by their respective Section/Society to receive this special honor for 2022.

For his example of leadership and dedication to mentorship of undergraduate and medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. Dr. Phillip Pierorazio is a Professor of Urology and Chief of the Section of Urology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center at the University of Pennsylvania. He has published over 200 PubMed indexed articles. He is actively engaged in the national AUA and Mid-Atlantic Section of the AUA and serves on many committees, including the AUA Guidelines Committee. Dr. Pierorazio has also made significant contributions to the development of young faculty members, using his experience to mentor and sponsor those around him. Recently, he has expanded his interest in wellness and resilience to help his colleagues and learners.

In recognition for outstanding and ongoing mentorship of students, trainees and fellow early-career urologists, particularly as it relates to academic development and productivity. Dr. Trinh is the Co-Director of the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Prostate Cancer Center. He has also served on the editorial boards of various journals, and is a frequent AUA speaker/panelist. Dr. Trinh’s clinical practice and research have focused on improving health care inequity and cancer outcomes – his research endeavors have not only benefited his patients, but those who are fortunate enough to work alongside him. Dr. Trinh is a gifted surgeon-scientist and role model for trainees and fellow young urologists alike.

Lee Zhao, MD

For outstanding mentorship of young urologists in reconstructive urology and gender affirming surgery. Dr. Lee Zhao completed his trauma/reconstructive fellowship at UT Southwestern in 2013 and is the Director of Reconstructive Urology and Co-Director of Transgender Surgery Program at NYU. He has pioneered robotic-assisted approaches to urologic reconstruction as well as penile-inversion vaginoplasty. Dr. Zhao teaches nationally and internationally on his techniques for reconstructive urology and gender affirming surgery. In a short amount of time, he has mentored eight clinical fellows and two research fellows, promoting their careers and assisting with opportunities for career development.

Clint Cary, MD

For significant contributions in the area of urologic oncology research and education, including extensive publication in leading scientific journals and textbooks. Dr. Cary is an Associate Professor of Urology at Indiana University and Director of Urologic Oncology Research and the Germ Cell Tumor Program there. He is the recipient of a NCI K23 career development award and the course director for Surgical Considerations and Coordinated Medical Management of Difficult Retroperitoneal Tumors at the AUA Annual Meeting. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Clinical Oncology®, European Urology, and The Journal of Urology®. In addition to his contributions to research, he has also authored numerous chapters in Hinman’s Atlas of Urologic Surgery and Campbell-Walsh Urology. He has spoken all over the world on RPLND.

Paul Toren, MD, PHD

In recognition of his active involvement in the Northeastern Section of the AUA for several years and as Chair of the Northeastern Section’s Research Committee. Dr. Toren is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Laval University. He is a clinician-scientist, where his laboratory focuses on translational prostate cancer research. He completed his medical training at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, urology residency and a clinical uro-oncology fellowship at the University of Toronto. Subsequently, he completed a two-year research fellowship at the Vancouver Prostate Centre, under the mentorship of Dr. Martin Gleave and completed a doctorate in experimental medicine in Dr. Amina Zoubeidi’s laboratory.

For significant contributions to the development of early-career urologists as a past member of the AUA Young Urologists Committee (YUC), including a term as Chair from 2017-2018. Under his leadership, the Committee published the 3rd edition of the Transitioning from Residency to Practice Manual with an added section devoted to military-specific urology practice. Additionally, Dr. Christman served as faculty for the YUC sponsored AUA Course titled Introduction to the Business of Medicine: A Primer for Young Urologists and Residents at the 2018 AUA Annual Meeting. As Program Director at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, Dr. Christman has led noteworthy changes to the residency training program, including a reduction in program duration from six years to five, expansion of program capacity from two residents per year to three, and contributions to the Navy’s transition to straight through selections for residency.

Kelly Stratton, MD

For his ongoing expertise in operative management of prostate cancer patients and his mentorship of other faculty across the country in urological oncology. Dr. Stratton currently serves as an Associate Professor of Urologic Oncology in the Department of Urology at the University of Oklahoma and Adjunct Associate Professor of Medical Oncology at the Stephenson Cancer Center. He also serves as Chair of the Stephenson Cancer Center Data Safety Monitoring Board, Disease Site Chair for Urologic Cancers and as a member of the Oklahoma TSET Phase I Clinical Trials Program, and is the Director of research for the Department of Urology. Additionally, Dr. Stratton has taken on leadership roles within the SUO’s Young Urologic Oncologists Section. His clinical research interests include advanced imaging of localized prostate cancer and new techniques for diagnosing prostate cancer.

In recognition of his dedication to the promotion and elevation of others. Dr. Moses is noteworthy as a tireless mentor to Black and women trainees, including Dr. Shenelle Wilson, founder and CEO of Urology Unbound and last year’s Young Urologist of the Year award recipient from the Southeastern Section. During his time in Nashville, he has additionally made a significant impact in the urologic mentorship of medical students at Meharry Medical College which has resulted in numerous successful matches into urology. Dr. Moses currently serves as Fellowship Director of the Urologic Oncology fellowship program at Vanderbilt University.

In recognition of her extensive engagement in and leadership of organizations dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 2021, Dr. Scotland facilitated efforts to bring Urology representation, for the first time, to the Student National Medical Association Annual Medical Education Conference. As Director of Resident Outreach for the R. Frank Jones Urological Society, she developed the Underrepresented Resident Mentorship Program, a nationwide mentorship program that provides guidance to residents of color throughout their training and progression. Dr. Scotland’s research has examined social determinants of kidney stone disease that can be utilized in low/middle-income countries. At UCLA Urology, she is Assistant Professor, Director of Endourology Research, and Associate Program Director for the UCLA Urology Endourology Fellowship.
